NEW website launched on clinical research studies

The National Institutes of Health has created a new website, NIH Clinical Research Trials and You to help people learn more about clinical trials, why they matter, and how to participate. From the first cure of a solid tumor with chemotherapy to the use of nitroglycerin in response to heart attacks, clinical research trials — or research studies involving people — have played a vital role in improving health and mental health, and quality of life for people around the globe.

Visitors to the website will find information about:

1. The basics of clinical trial participation

2. First hand experiences from actual clinical trial volunteers

3. Explanations from researchers

4. Links on how to search for a trial or enroll in a research matching program

Honoring Children of Alcoholics Week

An estimated 25 percent of all children in the United States are affected by or exposed to a family alcohol problem. SAMHSA supports the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) during its Children of Alcoholics (COA) Week.

COA Week celebrates the recovery of the many thousands of children (of all ages) who have received the help they needed to recover from the pain and losses suffered in their childhood, and it offers hope to those still suffering from the adverse impact of parental alcohol and drug addiction.

During COA Week, we acknowledge the millions of children affected by a parent's substance use disorder and celebrate that there is hope and healing for these children now and throughout their lives. This week—and throughout the year—remember to ask, "What about the children?" when speaking about recovery from substance use disorders.

You can support Children of Alcoholics Week 2012 by taking three simple steps.

1. Get the 2012 Poster 2. Visit the NACoA Facebook Page 3. Download Example Proclamation

SAMHSA will release new findings during COA Week from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health about adolescents living with parents with alcohol use disorder. Watch for the announcement on the SAMHSA Newsroom.
